Short Story Competiton

As part of World Book Day, Ms Ua Chonaill, our English coordinator, set the 1st & 2nd class children the task of composing their own short story. They could choose any topic they wished. All the entries were very impressive. The winners from each class are as follows:

First Confessions

Well done to all the second classes who made their First Confessions this week and a special thank you to all the 2nd class teachers for all the preparation work. The children are all now looking forward to making their First Holy Communion in May.

Seachtain na Gaeilge

Seachtain na Gaeilge kicked off in St. Peter and Paul’s on March 6th and we all made a huge effort to speak more Irish throughout the day. The children were encouraged to use their cúpla focail with a special reward going to the Gaelgóir na Seachtaine in each class. Gach lá we had weather reports, the news and a poem or two read over the intercom. - maith sibh go léir
The children all entered the seanfhocal art competition, with one lucky winner being chosen from each class.

We had a special visit on Tuesday from musicians Aisling & Mairéad who treated all classes to some traditional Irish music in the Hall. Pupils got to see the violin, bodhrán and concertina in action. The children learned about the musical instruments and had great craic clapping and tapping along to the beat. Great fun was had by all.

Seachtain na Gaeilge culminated with our Lá Glas on Thursday the 16th, when the children dressed in green, white and orange. An exciting ceolchoirm ran throughout the day with performances from every class.

Míle buíochas to all the teachers, SNAs and especially to Mrs Tobin for preparing the children for all the activities and making Seachtain na Gaeilge 2017 such a success. We would encourage parents and children to try and use a little Gaeilge at home as much as possible. Go raibh maith agaibh.

National Tree Week

We in S.S Peter & Paul were delighted to welcome Mr Graeme Price and the staff from Apple Green who donated a Strawberry Tree (Arbutus Unedo) to the school. The tree is an evergreen and native to Ireland. Ms Price's class had the honour of planting the tree in our school garden with the help of Brendan, our caretaker.

 Later the Apple Green visitors helped select the National Tree Week colouring competition winners from Ms Price's class. The winners were:

World Book Day

We had a fantastic World Book Day here at SS Peter and Paul! The day began with monsters, superheroes, animals, and all sorts of other fantastic looking characters pouring in the school gates, each one carrying a great book for Drop Everything And Read at 11am. 

Many teachers were pleading for help with the awful job of picking just one winning book character costume from each class. But at half eleven, the final choices had been made and our 16 finalists trooped over to the front hall for Mrs. Frayne, Mrs. Bouzzah, Mrs. Heffernan and Ms. UaConaill to decide the ultimate winner.

That ultimate, all-school winner was Alex from Room 10, who was dressed as Sully, from his favourite hardback book, Monsters University. Alex’s costume had to be seen to be believed: individual strips of paper fur hot-glued to an entire outfit, giving him a very convincing Sully shagginess, and face and hair detailing to complete the look!

Each of the runners up received a certificate and a Homework Pass from Mrs. Frayne, and left the front hall smiling broadly! Our overall winner Alex got to choose his prize, and made us all very proud when he picked out a lovely present for his mother, to thank her for all her help! We really do have the very best kids here at SS Peter and Paul. J Well done everybody!

World Book Day

Thursday 2nd March is World Book Day.
The children are encouraged to bring their favourite book to school on this day for Drop Everything and Read.
We will also be running our annual World Book Day dress up competition where the children can dress up as their favourite book character. As usual there will be a prize for the best HOMEMADE book character costume.
We look forward to another successful and fun World Book Day.

Maths Week

This year Maths week ran from the 12th to the 16th October and was a great success. Once again all the pupils were engaged in maths activities to emphasise the fun and learning that can be enjoyed whilst doing maths. Some of the classes checked the yard looking for clues on their maths trails, counting shapes and measuring windows with their clipboards in hand. 
The junior classes visited the hall to avail of the many activities set up for them to enjoy, such as sorting socks into pairs, following patterns, finding shapes with mini-twister. The boys and girls had great fun acquiring maths skills in this fun environment.
The importance of maths in everyday life and in people's work was emphasised and the pupils were enthralled at how much maths actually surrounds them

Healthy Eating

Well done to all pupils remembering to bring in only water or milk for their drink each day. This is a wonderful healthy change to our school policy.

   

Cake Sale

Cake Sale:
Our annual cake sale will take place in the school on Friday 17th of February which is always a great event in the school calendar. All donations of buns, cakes, slices and treats will be warmly received in the Hall on the morning of the 17th. Please note we are a nut free school and therefore to avoid nut ingredients in the items you send in. If sending treats into school in Tupperware/ lunchboxes please label them clearly for safe return. Each class will have a chance to visit the hall and pick some treats. The suggested donation for each child is €2.

Sing for Simon

Our Sing for Simon events in Ardgillan and Millfield shopping centre before Christmas were a huge success. The wonderful total of €1358.61 was raised. Sincere thanks to the choir, Ms. O’Brien, Mr. Donovan, Ms. Feeney, Ms. O’Sulllivan and all staff, parents and relatives who came to support on the day.
