North County Outreach Project

Christmas is an exciting time of year where we allow ourselves to overindulge, however for those who don't have the funds to do so, Christmas can be a time of worry and stress. That is why all the girls and boys in the school were asked by The Parents Association to bring in items that would help those less well off over Christmas. This initiative was set up by the North County Outreach project.

North County Outreach project is Christian all volunteer organisation with no government funding. They are a non profit organisation assisting and supporting homeless and struggling families by providing food and clothes and hygiene packs.

Edel Campbell is the volunteer from Balbriggan who just received an award from Balbriggan for her volunteer work.

Here is a list of some of the  products that the children brought in.
  • Selection boxes
  • Mince pies
  • Small bottles of water or fizzy drinks
  • Biscuits
  • Cereal bars
  • Choc bars
  • Coffee, tea
  • Sugar
  • New underwear and socks ladies and gents
  • Hats and gloves new or in good condition.
Take a look at how many boxes were filled by the children of Ss Peter and Paul JNS.

A huge thank you to each and every family that took the time to bring in something and thank you so much to the Parents Association for coordinating the process. These items will definitely bring some cheer to those less fortunate over this festive season.

Hall Noticeboards

Hall Noticeboards
Every few months, the hall notice boards get a makeover where a class from each level displays their magnificent art skills. This term, Mrs Cummins' junior infants, Mrs O Neill's senior infants and Ms Feeney's 2nd class made fantastic displays. Take a look at them below and make sure to pop over to the hall to see them.

Mrs Cummins' Junior Infants
Mrs Cummins' class made a wonderful winter wonderland display by creating penguins, seals and Eskimos using crepe paper.

Mrs Cleary's First Class
Mrs Cleary's class were learning all about 2D shapes in class and so made these lovely 2D pictures.

Mrs O Neill's Senior Infants
Mrs O Neill's class are feeling the winter chill and made some lovely winter paintings using white paint on black paper.

Ms Feeney's Second Class
Ms Feeney's class made fabulous snow globes. Each child wrote a short story about what it would be like to live in a snow globe and their photo was cut out and stuck inside. Make sure to go over and have a read of all the imaginative stories.

Science Week 8th -15th November

The school has been buzzing with science experiments to mark the annual National Science Week. Mrs Bouzzah, our science coordinator set up an array of activities to get the children's scientific brains working.

Heaviest Potato/Longest Carrot Competition
The first and second classes were asked to bring in the biggest potato and the longest carrot they could find at home. They were then weighed and measured in school.

The winners of the heaviest potato were...
1st place: Ross Gaffney
2nd place: Ula Krisciunaite
3rd place: Iveta Balakauskaite

The winners of the longest carrot were...
1st place: Lena Siuda
2nd place: Noemi Porada
3rd place: Dale Lennon, Mikolai Pawluk, Adam Richert & Juwaria Bager

Mrs Bouzzah was busy measuring all week!

Design and Make a Paper Aeroplane
The children were also asked to design paper planes using an A4 sheet with no staples or tape. Mrs Bouzzah tested each groups paper planes in the hall to see which one flew the farthest.
  • Roy Eze, Ben Smith & Lee Donnelly constructed the most successful paper aeroplanes in 2nd class.
  • Dylan Stuart, Ross Gaffney, Brian Ndongala & Conor Darcy were the successful aeroplane engineers from 1st Class

Guess the weight
Left over from Halloween, the children guessed the weight of a pumpkin. They used a 1kg to help them guess the correct weight.
  • 18 pupils correctly guessed the pumpkin weight as 3kgs

Science Stations

The fun continued in the hall when the exhibition tables were set up. The children  explored amongst other things magnets, thumb prints, floating & sinking and identifying fruit and vegetables. A big hit was the "Yawning Table" where the pupils explored whether yawning is contagious-the general consensus being that yes indeed it is!

Why not look out for some interesting programmes about science on tv or borrow science books from the library. You can also visit www.scienceweek.ie for more information or use the hashtag #scienceweek on twitter to view some interesting projects taking place around the country.

Thanks to Mrs Bouzzah who oversaw yet another successful Science Week with her usual enthusiasm and excitement.

Food Dudes

We are currently taking part in the Food Dudes Healthy Eating Programme which aims to encourage children to eat more fruit and vegetables. Health experts recommend that children eat at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables each day, however many are currently eating less than this.
For 16 consecutive schools days, the children receive free fruit and vegetables in school and are rewarded with stickers and small rewards for eating these foods. At the end of the 16 days, the children will then be encouraged to bring in their own fruit and vegetables from home and will be rewarded with certificates of achievements if they eat these foods.
The aim of the programme is to encourage children to repeatedly try fruit and vegetables so that they can learn to like them.
For more information on the programme and healthy eating ideas, visit the website www.fooddudes.ie

The Food Dude heros-Tom, Raz, Charlie and Rocco!!

Each child gets a bag of fruit and vegetables every day

Ms Hickey's Class are food dudes

Ms Kelly's class love eating carrots

Who will have a full sticker chart at the end of the 16 days??

Halloween Dress Up Day & Sponsored Walk

Our annual Halloween Dress up day & sponsored walk was a great success and thankfully the rain stayed away. We had great fun scaring everyone around the town with our spooky costumes and masks. A huge thank you to all those who sent in sponsorship money & to all those parents who helped out on the day.  There were some spooktacular costumes on the day and Mrs Frayne had the very difficult job of choosing a winner for the best home-made costume.

In the end 1st place went to Logan Bissett, 2nd place went to Louis Kelly and 3rd place went to Clare Kelly. Well done you three.

Have a look at some of the other fang-tastic outfits from the day!
