1916 Rising Commememorations

On Tuesday 15th March, we will be celebrating the 1916 Rising Commemorations by hosting a number of activities around the school. At 11am, the Irish Flag will be raised on our new flag pole at the front of the school building. All parents are welcomed to this event, where the children will attend and sing Amhrán na bhFiann & Óró Sé Do Bheatha Bhaile.

There have been a number of activities happening around the school to commemorate the 1916 Rising.
  • The Junior & Senior Infant children took part in a poster competition where they had to imagine what 1916 was like & then draw of picture of it.
  • The 1st class children listened to poems by Padraig Pearse and were set the task of writing their own poem to commemorate 1916.
  • Finally the 2nd classes were asked to examine and discuss the Proclamation and then write their own Proclamation for 2016.

The winning entries from these activities will be read out on Tuesday in front of the whole school. It is sure to be a great event and one that won't happen for another 100 years!!!

World Book Day 2016

World Book Day 2016

In spite of a hectically busy week, we had a fantastic World Book Day here at SS Peter and Paul JNS! The whole school fell silent after little break, as the boys and girls stuck their noses firmly into their favourite books for Drop Everything And Read. It was a real pleasure to walk around the school class after class full of bent heads, as the children engrossed themselves in their reading.

Some classes accepted the challenges of the on-line World Book Day Quiz, whilst others got creative with our 1916 themed Story Writing Competition. Our finalists are: Anna Guba (Room 6); Noah Lyons (Room 3); Jamie Bullivant (Room 4); Matthew Stuart (Room2); and Isabella Gaughan (Room 10). Our overall winner will be declared at the end of the week, so watch this space!

But undoubtedly the highlight of World Book Day was the sight of so many of the children dressed up in wonderful costumes as their favourite book characters. Many thanks to the family members who clearly put in so much work on these! It was extremely difficult for the teachers to choose a winner from each class, and even more difficult for Mrs. Frayne, Mrs. Bouzzah, Mrs. Adderly and Ms. UaConaill to choose the top three, but congratulations to:
1st Place – Rachel, as Betty O’Barley
2nd Place – Hannah, as the Queen of Hearts
3rd Place – Wiktor, as his favourite dinosaur from The Dinosaur Book

Our runners up were: Mia Casey, as Medusa; Caoilte Duff, as Captain Underpants; Sam Jackson, as Dr. Noel; Sadiya Alabi, as Cat; Dylan Stuart, as The Wimpy Kid; Brooke O’Hanlon, as Stampy Cat; Grace Allen, as Gangsta Granny; Rian Dunne, as Dr. Noel; Daisy Casey, as Little Red Riding Hood; Honzi Dobysek, as Asterix; Daniel Smith, as Mr. Bump; Wictoria Brys, as Hedwig; and Amie McCafferty, as Betty O’Barley.

Little Music Makers

We at SS Peter & Pauls were delighted to welcome Maria Sheil from ‘Little Music Makers’ back to the school for some interactive music workshops. Over the past number of weeks all classes enjoyed two workshops with Maria. This is in keeping with the school’s focus on Music this year. Junior and Senior Infants enjoyed an introduction to the Dalcroze method which incorporates the basic elements of music- rhythm, melody, harmony with body movements to provide and multi- dimensional approach to music learning. 1st and 2nd classes built on the basics covered in their workshops last year and incorporated some musical notation work into the sessions. Each class was buzzing and so enthusiastic after each workshop. Many thanks go to Maria for her time and effort over the past four weeks.

Tesco Community Fund Initiative

Back in September our school was chosen as part of the Tesco Community Fund Initiative. We asked for your support when shopping in Tesco to give your blue goodwill token to our school.  Last week we received a cheque for €285.71 which will go towards school resources. Thank you so much to both Tesco and to all the families who gave their blue tokens towards SS Peter and Paul JNS.

Cake Sale

The whole school thoroughly enjoyed our annual Cake Sale held on Friday, 5th of February. Many thanks go to the Parents Association and all the parent volunteers for running the event so smoothly. Well done to all the parents and pupils who made such a variety of beautiful cakes, buns and treats for the sale. The standard was so high this year. Thanks also go to all who bought goodies on the day. A special mention must go to Tara Murray, mother of Matthew in Ms. Harrington’s 1st class who made a fantastic S.S. Peter & Paul’s school jumper cake! It was so special the decision was made to raffle it among all the pupils. The lucky winner was Tadhg Rodgers in Mrs. O’Connor 2nd class. Well done Tadhg- we hope you enjoyed it!
